Why The Duke Blue Devils Will Make the College Football Playoff

There is a whole new regime in Durham, NC this season for the Blue Devils, led by new head coach Manny Diaz, previously the defensive coordinator for Penn State and former University of Miami head coach, and Texas quarterback transfer Maalik Murphy. It will be a whole new offensive and defensive scheme for Duke, and right now, it is tough to project how good they will be.

What we do know is that of the ACC teams, they have one of the more manageable schedules in the conference, especially out-of-conference where they will play Elon, Northwestern, UConn, and Middle Tennessee State to start the season and it should be expected that they will be 4-0 heading into their first conference match-up against UNC. The only game that should be written up as expected losses on the schedule is Florida State. Sure, Miami, SMU, and NC State also have better rosters, but in college football and the unknowns of what Duke might be this year - there could be a chance they are better than people think.

The new 12-team playoff may allow a team like Duke to sneak into the playoffs if they can pull off some games where they are underdogs and take care of the games they should.

Why The Duke Blue Devils Might Miss The Playoffs

Duke, currently, sits at +20000 to make the College Football Playoff and has the 13th best odds to win the ACC - both exceptionally long and indicative of the expectation for Duke this season. They lost their head coach Mike Elko and much of his staff to Texas A&M and starting quarterback Riley Leonard to Notre Dame, two key components to their 8-5 record last season.

The ACC has some very solid teams this season in Florida State, Clemson, and Louisville, and some upstart teams that could surprise like Miami and SMU in the conference. It is hard to see Duke ending up with a better record and schedule strength than those five, and the ACC should only be expected to have one to three teams in the playoffs.

Duke Blue Devils History in The College Football Playoffs

Duke has not made the college football playoffs since they began in 2014. However, they are on a two-game bowl streak after making the Birmingham Bowl in 2023 and the Military Bowl in 2022. Last season, Duke beat the Troy Trojans, who were 10-2, 17-10 in a game where they were 7.5 point underdogs.

Duke's bowl game history is littered with tertiary bowl games, sans the Chick-fil-A Bowl in 2013, for the last nearly 60 years. The Blue Devils last made a bowl game that would be considered a "major bowl game" in 1958 when they played the Oklahoma Sooners in the Orange Bowl - a game they lost 48-21.
