LIV vs. PGA Tour Match: Who Will Win TNT’s “The Showdown” Golf Matchup?

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

  • 🏌️The latest edition of TNT's "The Match" tees off next week.
  • ⭐ Dubbed "The Showdown," it's the PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf in Las Vegas, the grudge match we've all been waiting for.
  • 👀 Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy take on Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.

The golfing world and North Carolina sportsbooks are getting the matchup many have craved for years on Tuesday, when PGA Tour mainstays Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler will square off against their LIV Golf rivals, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.

The latter two defected from the PGA Tour in 2022, choosing to take the money and run off with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour in a major coup for the startup circuit, ultimately straining relations between the four.

In the meantime, Koepka has won a major since leaving the PGA Tour, taking home the PGA Championship in 2023, becoming the first LIV Golf player to win such an event. Then just this summer, DeChambeau won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, thanks in part to a late fade by McIlroy.

Of the four, McIlroy has been the longest-tenured pro, joining the ranks out of Northern Ireland in 2007 and winning 26 PGA Tour events and 24 tournaments in various circuits around the world. But his lack of major championships since 2014 will surely be part of the back-and-forth come next week.

The quartet of golfing royalty will square off on Dec. 17 in a two-on-two showdown at Las Vegas’ Shadow Creek Golf Course, inspiring BetCarolina.com to break down the odds on which twosome will emerge with a win.

Rory, Scheffler In Top Form Ahead Of Showdown

Right now, we’re going with the PGAT’s dynamic duo as a slim betting favorite over their LIV Golf rivals, with the former listed at -140 to win “The Showdown,” compared with +140 odds on DeChambeau and Koepka. Scheffler just won Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge last week, firing a final round 63 in the Bahamas for a six-shot victory over Tom Kim.

Meanwhile, McIlroy captured the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai just last month. Before that, he had runner-ups at the Irish Open and BMW PGA Championship in September, plus a T3 at the HSBC Championship and another win at Quail Hollow this year. Safe to say, bet on the current form of Scheffler and McIlroy

Meanwhile, neither Koepka or DeChambeau have teed it up in an official event in quite some time. Koepka played the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in early October (finishing T10), while Bryson hasn't played since the LIV Golf Team Championship in September.

The format for the made-for-TV event is pretty unique, with six holes of best ball followed by six holes of alternate shot and the final six being more traditional singles play, with the team that scores the most points winning the whole thing.

For now, what we know for sure is that “The Showdown” will air on TNT, TruTV and on the Max app at 6 p.m. Eastern time come Dec. 17, with four of the world’s best golfers looking to win one for their respective tours in Las Vegas.
