When it comes to emoji use, it seems like the Tar Heel State punches above its collective weight class, as North Carolinians have the eighth-highest search interest score of 76.
According to Emojipedia.com, the use of emojis has continued to rise in popularity. BetCarolina.com took a break from our North Carolina sports betting coverage to see what states used the most emojis over the past year, between July 8, 2023 – July 8. 2024 in celebration of World Emoji Day on July 17. Using Google Trends, we found and ranked states based on search interest scores for “emoji.” Then, we found out which emojis North Carolinians search for the most, using the same criteria as above.

Nationally, North Carolina’s search interest score of 76 surrounding topics around emojis ranked as the eighth highest total in the country, directly ahead of Maryland (75 search interest score) and Virginia (74 search interest score). As much as NC loves emojis, residents have likely been researching the top North Carolina sports betting apps these last few months.
The Tar Heel State ranked well behind national leaders in emoji interest, such as California (100 search interest score), Hawaii (89 search interest score), Washington State (82 search interest score), Nevada (81 search interest score), and Utah (80 search interest score).
In between, you’ll find locales like New Jersey and Georgia, which had search interest scores of 78 apiece to rank directly ahead of North Carolina nationally, illustrating how popular emojis are nationally.
North Carolina’s Top 5 Emojis
As far as individual emoji interest is concerned, it seems like Carolina residents have a lot of heart, as the love emoji had the highest search interest score in the state, at 20.
The heart beat out the sideways crying while laughing emoji as the top choice in North Carolina, as the humor-related emoji scored a total of 16 to beat out the crying face (16 search interest score), the hands clasped emoji (12 search interest score) and the in love face with hearts around it emoji (nine search interest score).
