What Big North Carolina Cities Are Most Forgotten?

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

Concord, North Carolina, is the home of Charlotte Motor Speedway, one of America’s hubs of racing and a place where NASCAR betting sparks great interest.

But did you know that Concord, where the 1.5-mile oval sits, is one of the 10 biggest cities in North Carolina? If you did, you’re ahead of a lot of other people.

BetCarolina.com wondered which big North Carolina cities tend to be forgotten the most. A quiz on Sporcle.com asked respondents to fill in the blanks for the top 10 most populous cities in the home of North Carolina sports betting. We then ranked the cities based on the percentage of folks who remembered them within the quiz’s time limit.

Biggest Cities Come Easily To Respondents

The municipalities with major pro sports teams came out on top among quiz takers on Sporcle, who were trying to remember the largest cities in the state. Raleigh, home of the Carolina Hurricanes, was filled in 97.1% of the time, followed by Charlotte (93.9%), where the Panthers, Hornets and Charlotte FC play. BetCarolina.com covers those teams and offers real money NC sportsbook promo codes too. Durham was third at 86.2%.

As for Concord? Only 28.7% of quiz takers got that one right, making it North Carolina’s most forgotten major city. Concord (population 111,863, according to World Population Review) is only about 20 miles northeast of Charlotte, perhaps making it easy to overlook even though it’s home to both the speedway and Concord-Padgett Regional Airport.

The second city that Sporcle quiz takers had a tough time remembering was High Point, which was filled in 40.7% of the time. High Point is the only city in the state that takes up parts of four counties – it’s mostly in Guilford County, but parts of the city limits extend into Randolph, Forsyth and Davidson counties.

In third on the list was Cary (45.9%), which boasts the North Carolina Courage of the National Women’s Soccer League. The 2025 NWSL season starts in March, but North Carolina sportsbook apps have soccer wagering available for league around the world every day.
