Few American states have a love for all things crispy quite like North Carolina does, as the Tar Heel State ranks among the leading areas in America when it comes to all things potatoes.
Given that the International Day of the Potato is celebrated on May 30. BetCarolina.com broke away from North Carolina sports betting coverage and used Google Trends to see what states are the most potato-loving, according to search interest scores for “Potato recipe.” After ranking each state based on search interest score, we found North Carolina’s favorite potato-based food and ranked the top 5 terms based on search interest score.

Nationally, North Carolina’s search interest score of 52 surrounding items that have to do with the potato ranks eighth nationally, sandwiched between Georgia and Pennsylvania’s score of 54 and Texas’ total of 49.
Nationally, the leaders in the potato search interest leaderboard were Maryland, with a score of 100, while Virginia (96), Michigan (80), New Jersey (60) and Ohio (57) rounding out the U.S. spuds top five.
Conversely, North Carolina finished ahead of Texas, which had a score of 49, while New York rounded out the top 10 in America with a search interest score of 48 during the survey period.

As far as individual potato recipes, North Carolina’s go-to spuds dish is the potato chip, which grabbed a search interest score of 52, beating out dishes like French fries (36 search interest score) and baked potatoes (16 search interest score).
Rounding out the potato dish favorites in the state of North Carolina of late were the humble mashed potato, which garnered a search interest score of 14, while potato salad rounded out the list in N.C., with a score of five.
Regardless of how North Carolinians like their spuds, it seems like residents of the Tar Heel State are batty for the carbohydrate-heavy food stock, with a host of recipes standing tall in the region when it comes to potato based dishes.
