Carolinas Among Top 10 States Participating In Veganuary

Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

Now that the holidays are behind us, many people are looking to shed the few extra pounds they gained from the food they snacked on at the parties over the previous month.

While many will look to cut down on just sweets, a growing number will try a different approach. Just like Dry January focuses on not drinking alcohol during the month, Veganuary urges people to go without meat or other animal products, such as eggs.

At BetCarolina.com, where you’ll find the best NC sports betting promo codes, we wanted to know which states are most likely to participate in a vegan diet for at least this month. Using Google Trends, we conducted a search from Dec. 27, 2024, to Jan. 3, 2025, ranking states based on search interest scores for “Veganuary.”

Veganuary’s roots trace back to the United Kingdom, where the movement started as a grassroots campaign 11 years ago. More than 25 million people around the world participated last year, and that number is expected to grow.

Somewhat surprisingly, North Carolina and South Carolina are among those tied for third on our list of states where people are most interested in Veganuary. While cities like Charlotte, Raleigh and Columbia are hubs for young professionals interested in taking better care of themselves, the states still retain a lot of Southern traditions. That definitely includes food, certainly in the land of legal North Carolina sports betting.

How To Make A Southern Diet Vegan

A vegan diet does not limit individuals to just salads and vegetable platters. Vegan menu options have grown substantially as more people have taken to the movement. A simple search online finds recipes for a variety of veggie burgers.

If you’re having people over to watch a Duke, North Carolina, South Carolina or Clemson basketball game, you can fix dishes like a fried chicken substitute made with seitan, a wheat-based alternative to tofu, or a batch of cauliflower buffalo wings.

And going without animal products does not mean giving up desserts, either. A quick search finds delicious recipes for items like peanut butter cookie bars and chocolate cakes.
