Can Backup Andy Dalton Do Well In Starting Quarterback Role?

Fact Checked by Nate Hamilton

Are the Carolina Panthers ready to move on from Bryce Young? That may be the case, as Panthers coach Dave Canales announced Monday the 2023 overall No. 1 pick would sit in favor of veteran quarterback Andy Dalton for Sunday’s game at Las Vegas.

The move is not surprising but also historic. According to ESPN, the former Heisman Trophy winner is the first quarterback to be taken first overall since the current NFL Draft format began 57 years ago to be benched for noninjury reasons in his second season.

Instead of Young, veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton is now set to take the snaps against the Raiders. The 14-year pro has started 163 games in his career, including one due to a Young injury last season. We have a full Panthers-Raiders odds breakdown here.

Honestly, it would be hard for Dalton not to improve upon Young’s stats, and if by some chance the 36-year-old can’t, then what was set to be an already long season in Charlotte would become even more unbearable. According to DraftKings, the Panthers are one of three teams whose punter has racked up more yardage than the offense during the first two weeks of the season.

Carolina is 0-2 after Sunday’s 26-3 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Young completed 18-of-26 passes for 84 yards and an interception. His 245 passing yards in two games rank 32nd and last among all quarterbacks, and his 9.1 QB Rating is also at the bottom. Green Bay’s Jordan Love’s 21.8 QBR is 31st among QBs, and he didn’t play Sunday after suffering a severe knee injury late in the Packers’ season opener.

Young’s 55.4% completion percentage is 28th and nearly 10 percentage points below the 65.1% league average. His 4.4 yards per passing attempt is next-to-last, with only Caleb Williams’ 4.0 average lower. Williams was the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, taken by the Chicago Bears. The Bears acquired the rights to that pick last year when the Panthers traded it, wide receiver D.J. Moore, and a slew of other picks for the right to get Young.

Panthers QB Change Leads To Line Movement

Since Canales announced the change, the line on the Panthers-Raiders game has dropped significantly. Late Sunday night, after the coach initially said he’d keep Young as a starter, BetMGM North Carolina Sportsbook listed the Raiders as a 7-point home favorite. As of Tuesday morning, the spread has dropped down to 5.5 points.

While news of Dalton starting has moved this Sunday’s line, don’t expect it to move the Panthers’ Super Bowl futures odds any time soon. At bet365, the odds of the Panthers winning the team’s first title this season are +75000. Those are the longest odds of any NFL team.
