Sam Hartman Heisman Odds: Healthy Hartman Picks Up Where He Left Off

Just prior to the start of the 2022 season, Wake Forest was dealt a huge blow as quarterback Sam Hartman was forced to miss time with blood-clotting issues. Many through it may cost Hartman his season, but to the relief of many, it was just one game.

Since returning, Hartman looks like the player who was and made Wake Forest one of college football’s best stories in 2021. The Demon Deacons suffered their first loss of the year this past week against Clemson in overtime 51-45, but in the process, Hartman showed why he’s one of the best in all of college football.

According to DraftKings Sportsbook, Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman currently holds +3500 odds to win the Heisman Trophy.

With his triumphant return, Hartman now holds the ninth-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy in 2022. Despite missing the opener against VMI, that’s better odds than Hartman was given to start the year. He's now tied with Michigan running back Blake Corum. 

To open 2022, Hartman was listed at +5000 and given the 15th-best odds. To overcome blood clotting, miss a game and move into the top 10 in the Heisman race before the end of September says a lot about Hartman’s talent and perseverance. 

What to Know About Sam Hartman Heisman Run

Entering 2021, Sam Hartman was experienced, but largely unknown and not overly accomplished. That changed as he led the Demon Deacons to an 11-3 finish and ACC Atlantic division title last season.

In his first three games in 2022, Hartman has not thrown for fewer than 300 yards in any contest. Despite missing the opener, the Wake signal caller already ranks in the top five nationally with 13 touchdown passes for the season. After rushing for 11 scores last season, Hartman has yet to find the end zone with his legs.

The Demon Deacons are 2-1 when Hartman starts this season, but his most Heisman-worthy performance may have come in their only loss. Against a Clemson defense that is perennially one of the nation’s best, Hartman passed for 337 yards and six touchdowns in a hard-fought overtime loss.

Entering October, Hartman ranks 14th nationally in yards per attempt and ninth in quarterback rating. He ranks second in the ACC behind only North Carolina’s Drake Maye in touchdown passes and passer rating.

For Hartman to make the December trip to New York, Wake Forest making another December trip to Charlotte would certainly help his case. The loss to Clemson this past week certainly hurts Wake’s chances, but there are four teams in the ACC Atlantic still unbeaten. With Clemson behind him, Hartman will have a chance to put on a show against the other three, beginning this week (weather permitting) at No. 23 Florida State. 

Sam Hartman Draft Odds

Despite a stellar couple of seasons, Sam Hartman is listed at just +10000 to be selected first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. That’s tied for the 31st-best odds among all players.

Despite his collegiate accomplishments and solid size at 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, Hartman doesn’t have the strongest arm. Another knock that Hartman has working against him is that there could be the perception that he is a system quarterback.

It’s unlikely that Hartman goes No. 1 overall, or even in the first round for that matter, but he will likely get a shot in the middle rounds. Even if Hartman never becomes a full-time starter in the NFL, his knowledge, toughness, and character could be good for an NFL locker room.
