A ranking system of the 30 NBA teams was developed by BetCarolina.com to find out which fanbase has been rewarded the most over the last 11 seasons, and as one might expect, the system wasn't too kind to the Charlotte Hornets.
How did we get here?
The first category, “Minutes Spent Per Win” was determined by taking the amount of regular-season games played by each team since the start of the 2011-12 season until the end of last season, multiplied by the average length of a televised NBA game (two hours, 13 minutes).
Once that number was calculated, we divided it over the amount of victories during that same span (2011-12 to 2021-22 season) to arrive at the final amount, which represents the amount of minutes watched by fans per regular-season win.
The second category, “Points Deducted for Playoff Success” was utilized to decipher the value of seeing playoff success during those 10 seasons gathered in the first category.
The point values were: 1 point per playoff berth, 3 points per playoff series win, 3 points per NBA Finals appearance and 15 additional points for an NBA Championship win.
After adding all of the points together for every postseason from the 2011-12 season to 2021-22 season, the points were deducted from the first category to arrive on the final points and rankings.
While online North Carolina sports betting is not legal for the current NBA season, stay close to BetCarolina for updates on the state's eventual path to legalization.
Carolina On My Mind
Fans of the Charlotte Hornets rank as the 25th most-rewarded fan base of the last 11 seasons.
Hornets fans have spent 318 minutes per win, which ranks 26th in the league. The Hornets had just two points deducted for playoff success, which ranks tied for the second-fewest in the league with the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves.
In that time span, Charlotte has had four different head coaches and made the playoffs just twice under Steve Clifford, once as the Charlotte Bobcats (2014) and once as the Charlotte Hornets (2016). Both postseason berths resulted in first-round exits.
In the six years since last reaching the playoffs, Charlotte has had just one winning season (43-39 in 2022) and have finished in the Top-2 in the division just once (2019).
Overall, between the 2011-12 and 2021-22 seasons, Charlotte is 363-500 in the regular season and 0-2 in postseason series.
What Are the Hornets’ Odds in 2023?
Sports betting is currently legal in North Carolina, though only in-person at the state’s three tribal casinos. Here are the odds for the Hornets for the 2022-2023 season.
According to DraftKings Sportsbook NC, the Hornets have the fourth-lowest odds to win the NBA Championship (+25000) and have the fifth-lowest (+12000) to win a conference title.
The Hornets are heavy favorites (+2500) to finish fourth in the Southeast Division, ahead of only the Orlando Magic (+20000). Charlotte is a heavy underdog to make the playoffs (+425), as well.
Once mobile sports betting is legalized in North Carolina (hopefully in 2023), BetCarolina will be your home for the best North Carolina betting apps.
