NFL MVP Winner Trends Since 2000

NFL MVP Winner Trends Since 2000

It’s been more than a decade since the last non-QB won the NFL MVP award, with players like Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson all winning at least one honor between 2012 and 2024.

In fact, the last non-QB to win the award was running back Adrian Peterson in 2012, who ran for 2,097 yards with an approximate value of 19 in 16 games that season to snap the league’s quarterback-dominant run at the MVP level.

This year, oddsmakers at Bet365 North Carolina have a number of QBs, such as Mahomes (+500), Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills (+800), Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (+900), C.J. Stroud of the Houston Texans (+1000), Jackson and Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers (+1400 each) atop their MVP odds board, illustrating how firm of a grasp quarterbacks have on the award at large.

At BetCarolina.com, we wanted to break down the last 25 NFL MVP winners to see what the trend is going into the 2024-25 season on NC betting apps. Using Pro-Football-Reference.com, we found the typical position, average age, and average team win-loss percentage for each recipient throughout the period.  During this timeframe, Rodgers and Peyton Manning are tied for the most wins, with four MVPs each.

How QBs Have Fared in MVP Race

In total, 84% of the last 25 NFL MVPs (or 21 in total) have been quarterbacks, with those gunslingers posting an average winning percentage of .799 during the years that they took home the league’s top individual honor.

The average age of the last 25 MVPs in the NFL is 30, which is two years older than Mahomes and Allen (both 28), three years older than Burrow and Jackson (27), five years older than Love (25) and eight years older than Stroud (22).

For Panthers fans, the last NFL MVP to hail from Charlotte was QB Cam Newton, who took home the award in 2015 after posting an approximate value of 21 in 16 games with the club, earning the lone MVP of his career in 148 games in the league.

Newton is also the only Panthers player to win the MVP award, which gives second year signal caller Bryce Young something to shoot for this season.
